Three Shows: Beki Basch, Hein Koh, and “Photo Flesh”

The next week is a good time to do some art-seeing on the westside of downtown Baltimore. Michael Jones McKean’s commission from The Contemporary has transformed an old department store into a dystopian museum and it’s teriffying and great. You can check it out by appointment until May 31st, when it will be deinstalled. Luckily some of the city’s strongest artist-run spaces are within a few blocks of the show and also tend to accommodate by-appointment viewings. I checked out three openings last weekend: Beki Basch’s trippy Vision Quest Lundi: Flush / Flood at Current Gallery, Hein Koh’s technicolor wonderland Joy & Pain at Platform, and the group show Photo Flesh at Terrault Contemporary featuring three international genre-bending photographers from the Birmingham School of Art.

We returned to Open Space’s Artist-Run Art Fair at Artscape in Baltimore.
Michael: About fifteen feet into the garage, I was struck by the impression that the scrappy Artist-Run Art Fair had suddenly started to look much more like… an art fair.
Paddy: So, the elephant in the room: “The White Guilt Confessional Booth”.

Artscape, Baltimore’s annual, gigantic public art festival, and the Artist-Run Art Fair launch this week. Yesterday, we posted about a few local galleries ahead of time to scope out what’s on view across town from the main festivities. Today, we’re discussing exhibitions from Melissa Godoy Nieto and Lane Harlan at Platform, Colin Foster at Springsteen, and Michael Assiff at First Continent.

Putting Artists First at SATELLITE

As I write this no less than six terrible karaoke singers are belting out “I will Always Love You”. This song and many others has been drifting down the halls of Artist-Run thanks to Stupid Bar, which oddly enough, is one of two bar installations at the Ocean Terrace Hotel. (Full disclaimer: Art F City’s F.A.G. Bar is the other installation and is situated next door.) A four foot mop of hair crawls through the hotel’s halls several times a day, as does a guy wearing a lamp shade for a hat and a telephone for a scarf, often followed by a seven-foot drag queen named Lazanya Ontre.

That’s just a whiff of what’s happening at Artist-Run at SATELLITE, an exhibition and curatorial project by Tiger Strikes Asteroid that invites artists to transform rooms in a derelict hotel called the Ocean Terrace into installations. You can actually feel the creative energy seep through the space, and after a week of looking at art safely quarantined in frames and vitrines, that feels nothing short of a miracle.

Announcing F.A.G. and a New, Artist-Run Satellite Show in Miami

We’re pleased to announce that Art F City is launching a new project space/curatorial platform called Fine Art Gallery. Fine Art Gallery will be primarily based out of Brooklyn, but we’re kicking off our programing with a booth in Tiger Strikes Asteroid’s Satellite Show during Art Basel Miami Beach 2015.

We’ll disclose more details about our project in the coming weeks, but we’re pretty excited about the new art fair, which will feature international artist-run spaces and collectives in Miami Beach’s defunct Ocean Terrace Hotel. Tiger Strikes Asteroid released the exhibitor list today, and we’re happy to report that it includes many of the galleries who participated in Baltimore’s Artist-Run Art Fair this summer, which we christened “The Art Fair that Doesn’t Suck”.

The Artist-Run Art Fair
Charles Street Garage
1714 Charles Street
Baltimore, MD

What’s on view: 19 booths in a parking garage occupied primarily by artist-run centers. We saw a car covered in white T-shirts, a fish tank filled with waterproof art, two bales of hay wrapped in reproductions of protest-sign messages like “Black Lives Matter,” “I am a Woman,” and “Silence is Compliance.”

Paddy Johnson: This is the best art fair I’ve ever seen.

Michael Anthony Farley: I was blown away by the Artist Run Art Fair.
