Highlights From PMF VIII

BALTIMORE – The 8th Publications and Multiples Fair wrapped up Sunday at the Baltimore Design School, and as always, was awesome. The fair, organized by art collective Open Space, features DIY publishers, independent artists, and all manner of great weird stuff. Notably, it seemed this year had less “traditional” fares such as zines or screenprints and more odd small objects. With hundreds of surprisingly affordable vendors from across the nation, it’s always a serious challenge to not go on a mega-art-shopping spree.

PMF VII Weekend Highlights: Exhibitions

Last weekend, Open Space hosted their seventh annual Publications and Multiples Fair, a smorgasbord of DIY press, affordable artwork, and booths from artist-run spaces around the country. I posted a slideshow of the fair, but also went to about a dozen galleries neighboring the Baltimore Design School (site of PMF VII) and Open Space’s brick-and-mortar location. PMF VII Weekend Highlights: The Fair

Open Space’s seventh annual Publications and Multiples Fair ran on Saturday and Sunday this past weekend at the Baltimore Design School. PMF is one of my all-time favorite art events—attracting DIY press, small publishers, artist-run spaces, and hundreds of artists working in a surprising variety of media. It’s free, most of the art is incredibly affordable, and the general vibe is somewhere between art fair and garage sale at a punk house.

The shear breadth of artists’ goods that one can actually buy is totally overwhelming—I’m sure I didn’t even see 60% of the highlights, but I snapped some photos of what caught my eye.

Mandarin Oriental

From Damien-Hirst-inspired appetizers to a painter’s palette full of sauces, chef Uwe Opocensky’s Art Basel menu at the Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong is ridiculous. [Quartz]
San Francisco’s art scene is being gutted by gentrification. To combat displacement, a group of philanthropists has opened the Minnesota Street Project—a for-profit warehouse building with artist studios, offices for nonprofits, and retail spaces for gallerists who can now share resources under one roof. It’s an interesting model. [ABC 7]
Brace yourselves: another art fair is coming to New York. A satellite fair called “Portal” will occupy the Federal Hall on Wall Street during Frieze Week. [The New York Times]
Baltimore collective Open Space has released the vendor list for their seventh annual Publications and Multiples Fair, which is always awesome. Some of our favorite artists and groups are participating, including the BHQF, April Camlin, Transmitter, and Bmore Art. [City Paper]

If you live in an American city, chances are your subway/public housing/bridges/other vital infrastructure is falling apart. The capital metro just had to shut for safety inspections. That disaster-fraught system is the poster child for the “Great Society” era infrastructure we’ve inherited—it was beautiful when it opened, but the past few politically dysfunctional decades haven’t seen us building anything new or maintaining what we have. “Demolition by neglect is now our maintenance policy, and not just when it comes to things we have made in bricks and mortar; it erodes our civic landscape, too.” [The Washington Post]
Now BART—another aging transit system left over from a more civilized time—is responding to twitter critics with brutal honesty. “We have 3 hours a night to do maintenance on a system built to serve 100k per week that now serves 430k per day. #ThisIsOurReality” [Vox]

Monday Links: Sweden’s Beloved Snow Penis Restored

The Housing Development Fund Corporation, or HDFC gives residents of low income co-ops a means of taking ownership from negligent landlords. First, though, they must be trained. The program’s not performing as one would hope. 33 of these cases made Public Advocate Letita Jones’ worst landlord list of 2015. [Curbed]

Tom Grotting has been taking advantage of Minneapolis’s unbearably cold winter by making public sculptures out of frozen-in-mid-poze pants. The internet loves these. [City Lab]

Someone should introduce wintry sculptor Grotting to Emilian Sava, the redeemed protagonist of what has to be the best headline we’ve read this week: “Swedish man creates giant snow penis to say sorry for destroying smaller snow penis”. [CBC]

No such luck for New Yorkers: Tompkins Square Park’s snow penis has been destroyed. [EV Grieve]

Luxury developers Chetrit Group purchased the iconic Sony building on Madison Avenue with the goal of converting it to condos for the 1%. There’s concern over the future of Dorothea Rockburne’s abstract murals that presently hang in the lobby. Rockburne has apparently been trying to contact The Chetrit Group for two years, while the developers claim they have been in fact been in contact with the artist. [Curbed]
