This Week’s Must-See Art Events: Reading is Fundamental

Start your week off with a dose of Civil Rights history Monday at IFC, where fierce pussy is screening The Black Power Mixtape and Wednesday at ICP, where Hettie Jones will be talking about what Making America Great really looks like. Thursday, we’re looking forward to two book launches. Andrea McGinty will be releasing her Ah Yes Bad Things at Printed Matter and Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art is throwing a party to celebrate the catalog for their current exhibition Queer Threads. Friday night there are mysterious but promising exhibitions opening all over Brooklyn. Then it’s DUMBO open studios all weekend. End the week with a day trip to New Haven (seriously, it’s a painless train ride) where Bortolami’s ARTIST/CITY program has paired Tom Burr with a Marcel Breuer masterpiece that now finds itself surrounded by an IKEA parking lot.

The world is a strange and wondrous place. We’ll see you out in it.

Monday Links: The Inflatable Doll Gets It

Watch star of the Japanese independent wrestling circuit and former headliner for New Japan Wrestling Kota Ibushi fight Yoshihiko, an inflatable doll. Incredible. There are so many different themes in this performance: sexuality, the body, the spectacle, humor not to mention the possibility of triumph without defeat. Also, this level of wrestling is no joke. According to AFC sources, this is one of the most physically dangerous matches they’ve seen that didn’t involve ladders or jumping off buildings. Looks like bankruptcy is now the least of dealer Perry Rubenstein’s worries. He’s been accused of fraud—Rubenstein sold a work by Takashi Murakami to Eli Broad and according to documents, paid $825,000 for the work, while Rubenstein told consigner Michael Salke that the buyer had paid just $630,000. Hank Willis Thomas has co-founded a super PAC. Nate Freeman recaps last night’s Impressionist and modern sale at Christie’s, calling the $145.5 sales a “solid end” to a rocky week. Highlights included a Jean Hélion selling for $3.4 million (beating its $800,000 high estimate) and a Picasso selling for $10.5 million, exceeding its $9 million estimate. The Rose Art Museum seems to be getting on track. Three years ago the museum announced that it was in such dire straits that it needed to sell off its art collection—or fire most of its staff. During this time, the museum has been without a permanent Director, but now they’ve hired Christopher Bedford. He’s leaving his position as Chief Curator at the Wexner Center for the Arts, where over the past four years he has helped bring exhibitions of Mark Bradford, Omar Fast, and Cyprien Gaillard to the Ohio State campus. I Got A Massage

Three days after the Art Fag City Rob Pruitt Art Awards and Auction* I headed out to Carroll Gardens. Artist Anastasios Logothetis had been inviting writers, curators and other arts professionals to Residency Unlimited for massages, and I managed to nab the last of these appointments. In return, I was expected to write something about the project. “Participants complete the work,” Logothetis told me, noting that the writing produced would be the only documentation of the piece.
