Times Square at Midnight is gonna look real yellow for the month of March thanks to Lorna Mills and Times Square Alliance. Starting March 1st, Mills’s Mountain Light/Time, an animated GIF collage of a sunrise over mountaintops will play on the Times Square Midnight billboard. Each loop will be timed to match the duration of a deep breath—real slow for breathing, but kinda fast as a sunrise.
Based on the GIF above alone we’re looking forward to seeing this project. The materialization of the mountains is pixellated in a way that seems to mimic the subtle shifts in the sky as the sun rises. The whole thing seems designed to whet our appetite for the morning just shortly before many of us will go to sleep.
P.S. It took me 30 minutes to track down the Mills GIF for the Times Square Alliance, and in doing so I came up with the following Kittie backup. I’m only including it here only because I think Mills would approve.
