Come April 9th, the birthday of famous conceptual artist Marcel Duchamp, artnet is hoping Museums will let visitors in for free if they know the secret password, “R. Mutt”. MoMA won’t confirm if they are participating, so I guess there’s a glimmer of hope. [artnet News]
Oooh, my favorite: Art world horoscopes! I think they hate Taurus’s over at Hyperallergic, though, because we’re always getting beaten down in our predictions. They’re calling this an Ana Mendieta month! Guys, you know she ended up dead, right? Meanwhile Sagittarius is slated to have a retrospective because this is the month they realize all their long term projects. [Hyperallergic]
Artist Tony Conrad has a saying, “Life is too rich to finish everything.” That’s a positive spin on all the things we can’t get done. In this article by digital artist Cory Arcangel he discusses “Music and the Mind of the World”, a project Tony started in the 1970’s and continued for seven years, in which he recorded every encounter he had with a piano. When he was done, he had more than 200 hours of sound, which was impossible to publish. Well, thanks to digital technology, not any more. [ARTnews]
In just over a week, “S-Town” has attracted 1.8 million subscribers to its podcast feed. It’s a blockbuster. If you haven’t tuned in to this, make a point of doing so. It’s an outlier in the genre of real crime because the writer, Brian Reed, isn’t a documentarian – he’s a storyteller. (It’s produced by Serial and This American Life.) As such the narrative weaves back and forth in time, employs and exploits metaphor, and is propelled by the contradictions and complexities of its subjects, not just the stuff that happens to them. It’s extraordinarily compelling, not to mention consuming. [The New York Times]

A $40 million diorama called Gulliver’s Gate, recreates some of the world’s most-beloved places. It went on display yesterday and will be on view in Times Square. You have to buy tickets to see it. [Gothamist]

This Week’s Must-See Art Events: Anxiety on High

Let’s face it—the bulk of this week’s chatter in the art world isn’t going to be about Donald Trump’s Inauguration, but Marilyn Minter and Madonna’s talk Thursday evening at the Brooklyn Museum lamenting it. And that’s as it should be. Resistance to this new presidency is essential.
Friday, we’ll be participating in the #J20 Art Strike, so no content on our website will be available but for a livestream of Rachel Mason lip synching the inauguration as FutureClown. Those seeking to participate in the art protests can head to the Whitney where Occupy Museums will be hosting a “Speak Out”.

Other than that, we’re recommending a show about soul crushing anxiety and despair at LUBOV, and a show called “Infected Foot” at Greene Naftali, because sickness also seems like an appropriate theme for the week. Sorry to be depressing. Unfortunately, there’s no other honest way to paint the events.

Tuesday Links: Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace

University of Toronto currently has an exhibition on at Robarts Library exploring Canada’s prostitution Laws. Organized by history professor Laurie K. Bertram, the show comes through old photos, zines and even issues of the Body Politic (one of Toronto’s first gay newspaper) to show how these laws were used to regulate non-normative sexuality. A fascinating interview between L.A. Times writer Carolina A. Miranda and writer and critic Nancy Princentha. Princentha is the author of Agnes Martin: Her Life and Art. The first full-length biography of the artist, published last year to wide acclaim, is aptly-timed: later this month, LACMA’s Martin retrospective opens. [Los Angeles Times]
Ahmed Naji weighs in on Egypt’s sudden embrace of the Egyptian Surrealist movement, even though it comes sixty years too late. The interest, however, is largely spurred by two competing surveys this fall organized by the Centre Pompidou and Sharjah Biennale, with little input from Egypt’s Ministry of Culture. A new tree of life has been unveiled, in the ongoing effort visualize and track the evolution of all living things. The diagram looks more like a fan or a flower than a tree and to at least one viewer—yours truly—is all but indecipherable. It’s all bacteria, though apparently humans are at the lower right of the graphic. I never could find them. [The New York Times]
Experimental filmmaker and musician Tony Conrad died of prostate cancer over the weekend. I (Paddy) met Conrad just once, at an annual birthday party fellow drone musician Phill Niblock threw for himself. I can’t remember if I told him I liked “Yellow Movie”, canvases with black-bordered white screens that, over time, would eventually turn yellow. At the time, it was the only work of his I’d seen. Mostly, we spoke with his friend about her work. [The New York Times]

This Week’s Must-See Art Events: Gallery Armageddon

Those who thought they’d ease into the work week after the holiday break will be sorely disappointed. Nearly every gallery in the city has an opening. Between the Abrons Art Center’s American Realness Festival opening this week and a rash of Chelsea and Lower East Side shows, your calendar will be full. And not just with the usual crap. Painter Jane Corrigan will debut fresh new figurative paintings at Feuer/Mesler—it’s her first solo show in two years. Grids, systems and minimalism take over The Kitchen, Cheim & Read and Lesley Heller, all in unrelated shows. And for those following all the climate change stories, Dana Sherwood’s exhibition at Denny Gallery focuses on our destruction of the earth. Assuming we survive long enough to see the show, it should be illuminating.
