In honor of the NYPL

In honor of the New York Public Library’s main branch

  • Last week we linked to news that The New York Public Library had dropped its renovation plan for the Central Library. (HOORAY!) Now listen to WNYC’s Brian Lehrer grill NYPL President Anthony Marx, who said he wasn’t planning to close the Mid Manhattan Branch, per se. “You were going to close it,” said Lehrer. “[T]he idea for many more computer terminals, and cafe spaces, and wireless access, and comfortable seating behind the lions got derided as turning the world’s greatest public research library into another Starbucks.” Thank God that’s over. • For reasons that are difficult to understand, how rich people spend their money is always a news item. Christie’s Contemporary Auction once more sees soaring prices. [The New York Times]
  • Who’s fucking tired of art fair press releases? Mark Flood. His new show “The Insider Art Fair” dumps on top ten’s and art fair artist bios. [Zach Feuer]
  • Richard Mosse wins the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize, but to the chagrin of The Guardian’s art critic, Adrian Searle. He tells twitter he’s never met the artist but detested Mosse’s Irish Venice Pavilion multi-screen film, read the self-serving interviews and spin-doctorish theorizing. Most people will be familiar with his shots of war torn Congo, in which he’s turned the landscape pink. This back and forth between Jorge Colberg and Moss from 2010 is very entertaining; Colberg takes him to task. [Conscientious]
  • Contemporary Art Daily has every photo you could ever want from the Whitney Biennial and has even embedded video works so we can watch them again later. [Contemporary Art Daily]
  • Hyperallergic obtained a letter allegedly from 1717 Troutman’s landlord David Steinberg, who suggested that fellow tenants had repeatedly complained about the galleries to city agencies. That’s consistent with the news that galleries are the only ones getting kicked out. [Hyperallergic]
  • VICE tweeted an image of a small blonde child getting cow’s milk squirted into his mouth, we clicked. Mossless Magazine interviews photographer Lucas Foglia, who photographs people living off the grid. [VICE]
