A pretty great collection of artist portraits with their cats. The pictures are drawn from Alison Nastasi’s new book “Artists and their Cats”, which means it far exceeds your typical blog listicle. [This is Colossal]
After watching (and transcribing) no less than 4 hours of video at Artists Space Hito Steyerl show, I drew a few conclusions. Great show, but sometimes the metaphors don’t quite work. [Artnet News]
The Walker Art Center’s “International Pop” exhibition uncovers pop art that you won’t find in any art history book. It surveys artists from all over the world who turned away from abstraction in the fifties and sixties, featuring work by German, Japanese, and Icelandic artists left out of the British and American-dominated Pop Art market. Oh, and let’s not forget women. “I was always accepted in the circles of male Pop artists back in the day,” says arist Rosalyn Drexler, “but it never occurred to them that I was the only one in the circle not getting paid.” *Sigh* [New York Times]

The most remote human settlement on earth–Edinburgh of the Seven Seas–is holding an architectural competition to make life on the South Atlantic isle more self-sufficient and sustainable. Competition hopefuls are staring down some steep challenges. The island is actually an active volcano. It last erupted in 1961, wiping out the community’s crayfish factory. Renewable energy is a problem, too. Wind turbines can’t withstand the beating the island takes from strong winds. So why would anyone want to live there? It’s totally beautiful. The number of black Americans killed by police in 2014 outsrips the number of people killed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. While this alone is a sobering thought, the data comes from a website called killedbypolice.net. That’s right. Things have gotten so out of hand, someone started a website in 2013 to keep track. Prospect 3 has appointed a new artistic director, Trevor Schoonmaker. Though Schoonmaker, the chief curator at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, may lack the star power of former directors Dan Cameron and Franklin Sirmans, he has clout; the Nasher organized Archibald Motely: Jazz Age Modernist, one of our favorite exhibitions from 2014. Alfred Hitchcock was the supervising director for an unfinished documentary of Holocaust footage. The new HBO documentary “Night Will Fall” covers the making of that film. [Los Angeles Times]

Friday Links: Five Art Stars You’ve Never Heard of (For a Reason)

Jerry Saltz calls for an end of what he calls Neo-Mannerism. You know all those tropes that make art look like art? Saltz is tired of all of them. The offenders aren’t named though, which is a bit of a disappointment. [New York Magazine]
We use Google Docs all the time to edit on the blog, but we’ve been noticing a bunch of bugs lately. There’s no better alternative to working in the cloud with all your other editors—yet, but Draft’s one alternative we’re curious about, especially since it doesn’t immediately let other collaborators delete your original copy. The Walker Art Center’s Internet Cat Video Film Festival is hitting the road, and stopping in Brooklyn. Surprisingly, the museum’s fest isn’t going to be at an art spot; rather, on October 25th, you can grab seats at the Warsaw, one of Greenpoint’s largest music venues. [The Walker Art Center]

Sarah McKenzie Biography

Sarah McKenzie received her BA from Yale and her MFA in Painting from the University of Michigan. She is based in Colorado, and is represented in Denver by Robischon Gallery. In 2006, she was the first place winner of the National Young Painters Competition, hosted by Miami University of Ohio. Past exhibitions include the Katonah Museum of Art, the University of Akron, the Bemis Center, and the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art. McKenzie‘s work is currently on view in the exhibition “Worlds Away: New Suburban Landscapes” at the Walker Art Center, and in the exhibition “This Modern World” at the General Electric World Headquarters in Fairfield, Connecticut
