If you haven’t seen Michael Smith and William Wegman’s The World of Photography (1986), set aside 25 minutes to do so. The film serves students and comedians alike; Wegman plays a seasoned photographer willing to teach Smith, an eager but dimwitted student who maintains the baseless belief that he has a knack for photography. Weirdness ensues. Smith obsesses over sandwiches. Seemingly everything reminds Wegman of his dog. Oddly enough, the whole film is a little like watching Twin Peaks’ Detective Cooper man a photo studio, which is pretty great.

Back in early January, Carolina Miranda, John Powers and I had a twitter debate over the merits of ArtPrize, the self-proclaimed grand experiment in Grand Rapids, MI, which awards hundreds of thousands of dollars, based mostly on popular vote. Carolina was suspicious, John thought ArtPrize could do artists better, and I decided the event was great. Hoping to hash this issues out a little a more in person, John Powers and I spent close to two hours with ArtPrize’s Kevin Buist, discussing its various merits and detractors. The result: 18 sequential YouTube videos documenting our conversation, idea by idea.

Rhizome reports they’ve snagged in their archive; good preservation news for the art folk. They’ve even gone so far as to replicate all the original tags, so props to them for due diligence.
