The Hugh Lane Gallery Julian Opie
Does any one actually buy the press release statement “Challenging the traditional gallery relationship between art and its consumers…” as applied to Julian Opie? Just because he’s made a public art work doesn’t mean his art interrogates anything. Why is this an e-flux mailer?

Opie was taught by Michael Craig Martin at Goldsmiths and is a Lisson Gallery artist. He isn’t challenging the gallery/”consumer” relationship, he’s one of the people who helped to give it its current form.
I like his work, the earlier work more than the most recent, but he has always been about making consumable brands and the value of his work doesn’t consist in challenging any artworld relationships.
