The Tumblr Space Sculpture has mined countless hours of old movies to archive the dying art of pre-CGI special effects. From campy mid-century sci-fi through insanely-detailed models from Eastern European Star Wars knockoffs, it’s a treasure trove of practical effects, miniatures, and hand-drawn animation. Don’t these all look like they were so much more fun to make than 3D renderings? Ironically, they’re now preserved for posterity in GIF, arguably the most iconically digitally-native medium of the moving image.
