Today is Flag Day, and Creative Time is celebrating with the launch of artist-designed flags. Pledges of Allegiance is a new commissioning series that invites sixteen artists to design flags to fly atop Creative Time’s headquarters at Bowery and 4th street.
They’ve kicked the project off today with Marilyn Minter’s “RESIST FLAG”. It is pretty awesome, and certainly sets the tone for what’s likely to be a very politically-loaded series. Every month, the flags will be swapped out for another artist’s, and given the line-up we can expect plenty of work with similar sentiments. Many of the participating artists have been outspoken critics of the Trump regime (perhaps none more eloquently than Yoko Ono) so this act of reclaiming public space should be a small catharsis for many of us.
Here’s the full line-up who will be swapped out monthly: Tania Bruguera, Alex Da Corte, Jeremy Deller, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Ann Hamilton, Robert Longo, Josephine Meckseper, Vik Muniz, Jayson Musson, Ahmet Ögüt, Yoko Ono, Trevor Paglen, Pedro Reyes, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Nari Ward.
