In the past one might have imagined that were they to break/puncture a photograph that it would shatter like a mirror, or exhibit a literal rupture—i.e., tear like a piece of paper. In the present, a viewer is more likely to imagine that a semi-intelligent semi-transparent liquid would seep out, itself both a lens and a healing balm.
