Expect the next three days to be filled with election news. Events are largely election related, and thus I will be wearing pant suits the whole god damned time. (Go Hillary!) Once that’s passed, there’s a whack of openings in Chelsea Thursday—Andreas Gursky, Paul McCarthy, etc—a must-see ceramics inspired show at Present Company in Bushwick Friday, and Smack Mellon’s 20th Anniversary exhibition Saturday. In short, nothing, not even an election, disrupts the art world.

It’s always a surprise to see a group show, think you “get it,” and then read the curator’s statement and realize you’re totally off. That was my experience of almost everything we saw. That’s rewarding in its own way, though. And it gives me optimism that there are artists and curators veering away from the obvious, overly referential, and aesthetically homogeneous.

At 1,500 bucks, Bushwick Basel might have the smallest operating budget of any art fair we’ve been to, but it drew some of the largest crowds at this weekend’s Bushwick Open Studios. Debuting at artist and fair organizer Jules de Balincourt’s Starr Space, the fair attracted 11 galleries from around the neighborhood. It was, by many accounts, a success.
