This Week’s Must See Events: Speculative Future to Reflect on iPhone

Try making sense of that headline without a key. It refers to Xiaoshi Vivian Vivian Qin’s panel discussion at the Queens Museum this Sunday, in which she invites a panel of experts to look back on our current time from the point of view of a person who found an iPhone 100 years in the future.

As per usual, there’s lots to see and do this week. Monday kicks off with a dinner and panel discussion organized by William Powhida and Jennifer Dalton on affordable housing in an luxury apartment. That’s tonight, and tickets are sold out, but hope springs eternal. RSVP now and see what comes of it.

Tuesday, at Light Industry, we’ll all have the opportunity to view John Berger’s Ways of Seeing on color shifted 16 mm film. For reference, I’ve posted the first video of his four part series, which is in perfect condition.  Now you can compare and contrast!

Saturday, we host the AFC Workshops: 21st Century Survival for Artists. Sign up now! And finally, we’re excited to see all the MFA graduate shows that will open this week—namely those by Cornell, Hunter, and ICP-Bard. Those of us who want to stay current need to attend these events. We gotta keep up with the kids!

This week, it’s art for all your senses. Start the week with a cinematic sensory overload. Taper off with some quiet contemplation and intentional time-wasting. Watch a very different kind of silent film, take a hands-on approach to roaming the city, or consume some art—literally, at a dinner party. What else is on this week’s menu? Cyborgs, activists, and dead squirrels. Yum.

If you thought the barrage of openings was over think again. We’re now into week three of opening season. And luckily there’s some good shows on the horizon. Those who are into military inspired Bauhaus drawings, will be pleased to learn that the Drawing Center opens an Alexander ‘Xanti’ Schawinsky this Thursday. Those who are into memes and digital aesthetics have a discussion at PRATT to attend this Friday with, among other star curators, Christiane Paul (The Whitney) and Boris Groys (everywhere). And finally, this Friday the ICA opens a multilingual opera by Alex de Corte and Jayson Musson we’re more than curious about. Musson will be playing his famed youtube persona Hennessy Youngman, so we can’t wait to see what he does with de Corte.

This Week’s Must-See Art Events: Orgasmatron Lives!

We’re still flying by on September’s openings, but by the time the weekend rolls around, we’re gonna see some signs of new art life. Throughout the week, there’s a heckuva bunch of artist talks and lectures. We just might jump out of our panda costumes to attend a few. By the time the weekend rolls around though, we’ll have some hard choices to make. Pandacam re-enactments or Mike Kelley’s behemoth retrospective at PS1, Rollin Leonard’s solo show of cut up digital bodies, or Robert Longo’s Patsy Cline cover band reuniting at The Kitchen. Only time will tell whether the government’s shutdown has greater effects on the art world than anyone could have predicted.

Art Fag City at The L Magazine: Defining A Cagean Aesthetic

It's hard to imagine a show that effectively surveys John Cage's influence while remaining fresh. The musician, philosopher, and artist's influence is simply too large to track, and his strategies have been so thoroughly digested that they often appear as cliches.

Luckily, if curators Joachim Pissarro, Bibi Calderaro, Julio Grinblatt, and Michelle Yun thought about that difficulty, it didn't stop them from putting a show together. Notations: The Cage Effect Today, at Hunter College (through April 21), includes more than 25 artists whose work has been touched in some way by Cage. Why I like it after the jump.
