This Week’s Must See Events: Elevator GIFs and Dystopias

We’re looking at a pretty light week for events coming out of Memorial Day weekend. The good news here is that while there maybe fewer openings and talks to attend there’s no shortage of quality. Start your week today by visiting the SVA Computer Art thesis show and leave time on Wednesday for a performance by M6 of Meredeth Monk compositions. Thursday we’ll be heading out to the Museum of Moving Image to check out their new GIF commissions and panel discussion and Friday we’re heading to 470 Vanderbilt for an all woman art show. Saturday Cary Hulbert will take a stab at predicting the future at Ortega y Gasset Projects and Sunday we’ve got a day of music by John Zorn at the Jewish Museum.

Long story short, for a light week, we’ve got plenty to do. We expect to see you around!

So the European Union has ruled that Dan Flavin’s sculptures are indistinguishable from light fixtures, and as such should be taxed at 20 percent, rather than the 5-percent rate for artworks. What? [The Guardian]

In our email inboxes: a note from SFMOMA that you can now purchase museum tickets online through January 2017. Are the lines really so long that tickets must be sought out so far in advance? The Jewish Museum launches its first Kickstarter campaign today. The museum has set a goal of $30,000 for their fall exhibition, Take Me (I’m Yours), which will let visitors bring home artist-produced takeaways, like temporary tattoos by Lawrence Weiner or air dispensers (not sure what that will look like) by Yoko Ono. 400,000 of these small editions will be made in total. Despite market turbulence, Sotheby’s actually saw an increase in year-to-year profits. This is mostly due to cost-cutting within the auction house. Sotheby’s CEO, Thomas Smith, identifies “a paradox” wherein there’s still demand from collectors for high-value works in a financially uncertain time, but that sellers are holding out and restricting sales volume because they believe this isn’t the best time to sell. Dear collectors, please consider putting more of that pent-up purchasing power into the primary market. [Business Insider]

Tuesday Links: Artist’s Jesus Dartboard Causes Predictable Furor

Rutgers University Libraries caused a controversy with the display of “Vitruvian Man” by an anonymous student or faculty member. The piece is one of the Jesus figurines from a crucifix attached to a dart board. After the image went viral on the conservative internet, the library removed it and issued an apology. [The Blaze]

Phil America installed the guerilla art exhibition The Perilous Fight in the abandoned Nevins Street subway station. The MTA hasn’t sanctioned the installation and hasn’t issued a statement, but it’s unlikely the show will remain there. The work comprises a series of flags America made in tribute to victims of gun violence. [Gothamist]

Someone found a demo tape of early HD video technology from 1993. It’s pretty incredible, because it looks more or less like it was shot yesterday. With the exception of the twin towers and older taxis, this could be from someone’s iPhone 6. Chris Plante muses on the strangeness of seeing the past through the lens of contemporary technology. There’s an entire generation for whom nostalgia won’t be characterized by grainy film, choppy video, or Polaroids. [The Verge]

Larry Gagosian is on the cover of the Wall Street Journal Magazine this week, and the story of his art world ascent is surprisingly compelling. How did Gagosian go from being a Los Angeles parking lot manager to someone who owns a private jet and a globe-spanning chain of galleries? Leo Castelli’s mentorship, for starters. MoMA’s architecture and design galleries will not be demolished in the new renovation. They closed the galleries as part of the construction process in their new expanded space next door, prompting speculation that those galleries would be sacrificed to the reno gods. No such luck. Does the Babacar M’Bow/MoCA North Miami drama never cease? The former museum director is now suing the city of North Miami for wrongful termination after he was dismissed for sexual harassment claims. [artnet News]

Auction house competition is so cut-throat that their commissions have plummeted more than 50 percent since 2009. There is now a term called “enhanced hammer”, which refers to what happens when an auction house offers between 4-7 percent of the buyer’s premium on top of the sale price. Then there’s price guarantees too. Definitely still a seller’s market for those of us who have a bunch of high end art we want to sell (hedge fund managers!). [Bloomberg]

It seems as if there’s a “but is fashion art?” article every time a museum opens a garment-centric exhibition. Now, we’ve got Isaac Mizrahi at the Jewish Museum and Manus x Machina: Fashion in the Age of Technology opening at The Met next month. The latter sounds like it’s going to be pretty interesting. There’s also the new film “The First Monday in May”, which chronicles the curation of last year’s blockbuster China Through the Looking Glass and the equally considered Met Gala. Does fashion belong in a museum? As long as it rakes in these levels of attendance and funding, that question answers itself. [The Washington Post]

Friday Links: Like Men, But Not

Today and today only, the Design Museum Boston will be giving away 600 artworks that say “I think you’re fabulous” and “you’re spectacular.” These are the takeaway equivalent of the selfie. [BostInno]
Another art project that just begging to be photographed: 888,246 red ceramic flowers will flow—like a river of blood—from the Tower of London to commemorate the British who perished during WWI. [Colossal]
It looks like all-powerful collector and MoMA’s President Emirita and Chairwoman Agnes Gund has taken up the mantle of gender inequality. (We’re just glad to hear about something other than her dogs, her wealth, and MoMA-related opinions that aren’t Glenn Lowry’s). Last month, Gund speculated that the Google Art Project, a virtualization of MoMA’s collection, will bring out more lesser-shown female artists. And now she writes in an op-ed that there’s still a long way toward gender equality in the art world. This is presumably to promote MoMA’s initiative to give the museum over entirely to women artists in 2015. That’s a good thing! [Huffington Post]
Malik Gaines, of performance troupe My Barbarian, interviews his father Charles Gaines, who’s also an artist and currently has a solo show at the Studio Museum Harlem. Gaines the elder explains what it was like to make conceptual work in the 1970s: “When I started showing in New York, my name got out there, but nobody knew I was black, and then I started going to parties or to lectures or I’d be interviewed, and I can’t tell you how many times people have come up to me and said, ‘You’re black.’ ‘I really appreciate you informing me. The history of BathSalts: A Drag Show for Fuck Ups. Colin Self explains the need for this weekly meet up as an escape creating “a space to clown and celebrate nonsense and absurdity with a form of ‘drag’ not based in subverting ideas of gender, but rather the content of our newsfeeds.” Drag for everyone!
