Johnston Foster, Installation shot at Rare’s opening reception of Summertime Blues, photograph AFC
It’s hard to know whether it was last Thursday night’s crowd or the sheer number of Johnston Foster’s warring sculptures at Rare that made it so hard to get into the gallery, but either way, the place was packed. I’ll reserve judgment on the piece pictured above on account of the fact that I couldn’t see it, and throw a shout out to Foster’s plastic rooster in the back room which I saw and liked. Much like the artists included in Diamonds Cut Diamonds an exhibition the artist curated two years ago at Rare, Foster masterfully transforms common and otherwise mundane materials into energetic and frequently whimsical sculptures. I recommend stopping by the gallery.
