Prepare to have everything you know about Australian contemporary art turned on its stomach. “Peripheral Visions: Contemporary Art From Australia” intends to debunk the myth that Australian art is all about landscape painting. Nine of Australia’s finest artists, including 2009 Venice Biennale artists Vernon Ah Kee and Claire Healy & Sean Corderio, will be curated by Marissa Bateman, the assistant curator of Australia’s 2009 Venice Biennale Pavilion. If anything, this list represents a spectrum, with perspectives ranging from Aboriginal to pop culture.
It’s as good an introduction as we could hope to get from a small group show. And the timing couldn’t be better; Saatchi and London’s Royal Academy are currently hosting large surveys of Australian art. At best, bringing shows like these to New York and London may introduce us to something outside the market mold. And as for the future, a pregnant Santa seems like a pretty good omen.
