Color Wheel is a series in which we identify a “trending” color in the art world and post a daily image that illustrates its popularity. This week’s color is brown.
Paul McCarthy is the king of brown art. He’s got the spectrum covered with shades ranging from poop to chocolate. It’s hard to choose just one brown work by McCarthy, so I’ll choose one that’s easily missed. Recently seen at Hauser & Wirth in Chelsea, this smallish, shit-colored monochrome seemed subtle in contrast to monumental wooden sculptures like “White Snow, Erection.” And yet, it’s just as dirty.
