The Jewish Museum will host an evening roundtable discussion on Thursday, June 19, in connection with Other Primary Structures, its current exhibition surveying 1960s-era Minimal sculpture from a global perspective. Moderated by Ruba Katrib, Curator at SculptureCenter, “Defining Structures: Contemporary Minimal” gathers together artists a generation or two removed from those featured in Other Primary Structures, whose work has been influenced by Minimalist tradition.
Participating artists Charles Harlan, Carissa Rodriguez, Erin Shirreff, Daniel Steegmann Mangrané, and Allyson Vieira have all exhibited their work widely over the past several years. Much like their forebears, their work encompasses a wide variety of media, from industrial materials such as wood, concrete, and steel, to more delicate and natural elements such as watercolor, insects, and volcanic salts from Hawaii. While many of their projects are experienced in the real world, others are designed as ethereal interventions in digital space. The discussion aims to expand our understanding of contemporary sculpture, with the themes and approaches present in Other Primary Structures as a backdrop.
“Defining Structures: Contemporary Minimal” begins at 6:30 pm, and admission to the Jewish Museum (5th Ave at 92nd St, New York City) is Pay-what-you-wish on Thursdays, 5 – 8 pm (RSVP recommended). Other Primary Structures is on view through August 3.
