Procrastinators, rejoice! There’s still time (a few hours, actually) to apply for a summer residency at ACRE, an artists’ cooperative and residency program set in bucolic southwest Wisconsin.* The residency boasts over 1,000 acres of wilderness, farmland, and wildlife with amenities to match: an outdoor woodshop, screen printing facilities and an art and tech studio. Residents live in an actual lodge (don’t worry, there’s wifi) and share communal meals prepared from locally sourced meats, produce, and dairy. If that weren’t enough, ACRE also hosts a cadre of international visiting artists, curators, writers and thinkers. (This year’s roster includes Geof Oppenheimer, Claire Pentecost, and Astria Suparak, to name just a few.) Applications are due tonight at 11:59 CST, but not to worry; the application is simple and takes less than an hour to complete. Check out ACRE’s website for more details, or get started on your application now.
*Some additional notes on ACRE, from a firsthand witness/former resident:
- ACRE is so far out in the middle of nowhere that the sky is completely black at night.
- If you’re lucky, you might get a secret ACRE stick-and-poke tattoo.
- What do the locals do for fun? Civil War re-enactments.
- Trout.
- Tire swings into the river.
- Steuben, WI has a population of 177. True story.
