"Rusty," Paddy Johnson's pick for the 2011 ArtPrize

“Rusty,” Paddy Johnson’s pick for the 2011 ArtPrize

ArtPrize, a really big art exhibition taking place in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is like catnip for art bloggers: every time it rolls around, it’s one of the most tweeted, blogged, and posted events of the year. It’s populist-ish, and you just never know what’s going to happen—or how many animals, shiny things, or fake people you’ll see. Local TV loves it, too (watch AFC Editorial Director Paddy Johnson’s TV appearance from last year). So, let’s just say we’re excited to see what ArtPrize has up its sleeve this year.

This week, ArtPrize released the names of the 1,554 entries that’ll be on view in this year’s edition, running from September 23 – October 11, 2015. These artists will be competing for $500,000 in prize money, with $200,000 decided by public vote and a jury of art worlders, and another $100,000 divvied up among 2-D, 3-D, time-based, and installation categories.

But the best part is that you can preview these artworks on ArtPrize’s Tumblr-like site for entries; there’s so much invention, and so much whimsy. Some of my favorites? A red, molten shopping cart! A giant rug monster! A patriotic smiley-face man made out of used musical instruments! Dust dancing should be popular—you’re actually dirty dancing—with dust. Now go forth and scan the sea of ArtPrize entries.
