It’s Friday. There’s very little in the way of art news happening today—so let’s go back and chill with the past. Really, this is just an excuse to watch YouTube vids. Today, we’re saying hello to an old AFC favorite, Klaus Nomi.
You probably know a little bit about our postmodern-style and -music icon. But if not, here’s a paragraph with some background info on Nomi. (If you don’t need the info, just watch the vids.) As for music: In 1980, the New York Times referred to Nomi’s music as “robot rock,” a term which never really caught on, but is pretty spot on. As for fashion: Nomi often wore the same stage suit, a V-shaped tux with shoulders that can poke your eye out, at nearly every public appearance (although he’s also known for this brilliant Victorian-era outfit with a poofy ruff). So, unlike Lady Gaga, he never had to change up his suit with every gig to prove how eccentric he was.
Nomi was smart, and he even had a simple philosophical explanation behind his black lipstick. In this staged video for the fashion label Fiorucci, Nomi says he wears it “so you can see my lips, and you can see what I’m doing with them.” Yep.
