The world may never agree on whether or not it’s okay to like George W Bush’s bizarre, naïve, introspective paintings. Oil is, apparently, Bush’s prefered medium for generating controversy and strife in any context. Personally, I’m inclined toward the now-infamous Jerry Saltz camp of appreciating the weirdness/psychological intrigue of the former president’s artistic endeavors while still thinking we should probably introduce him to the Dutch Masters by way of The Hague’s war crimes court. However, I have been warned repeatedly that liking Bush’s paintings is strictly against AFC’s Code of Critical Conduct. Just to reiterate: The official Art F City stance is that George W. Bush’s paintings are terrible.
One thing we can all probably agree on: no one wants to be a mere thigh’s-length away from Dubya’s naked peen. Least of all, apparently, Patrick the starfish, who seems downright horrified at the sight.
As a more serious aside, I do resent that Bush painting for forever tainting my perception of Frida Kahlo’s 1938 “What I Saw in the Water” (below). I’ve always been a huge Kahlo fan, but now I can never look at this painting without thinking of Bush staring at his feet and seeing the smoking Twin Towers:
