On the front page of Eva Papamargariti’s Tumblr right now, the above GIF study “Wireframe Hands Holding Black Unidentified Object” is just to the left of her “Soft Touch” video, which was recently released by Undervolt & Co. (Full disclosure: I’m the experimental video art label’s senior editor.)
Papamargariti’s work has often been situated in the higher-than-HD 3-D rendered hyperreal category of digital art, but the side-by-side demands a split attention span on what looks to be at first glance a shift toward the figurative, and the inviting intimacy of someone showing their hand. A connection is made, but the objects held (whether it be the GIF’s black unidentified object or the longed for smart device in “Smart Touch”) seem to get in the way. It’s earnest but isolating—sort of like a day spent constantly checking your phone, or staring at your laptop screen.
