GIFs are not typically associated with traditional art forms like painting. Even though there is certainly an enormous range of GIF art, most GIFs have a distinctively futuristic or, at the very least, contemporary look derived from a world of Emojis, 3-D animation and viral videos. However, artist and animator Lauren Gregory shatters this assumed GIF aesthetic with her unexpected and refreshing oil painting GIFs.
Merging finger-painting with stop-motion animation, Gregory creates her GIFs by documenting her work’s progression every couple strokes to construct the appearance of a moving painting. Whether a portrait of a woman eating fried chicken at Popeye’s, a crackling fire or a knock-down fight, Gregory’s subject matter is both whimsical and commonplace–Impressionism for the 21st century.
One of Gregory’s GIFs that I am more than a little obsessed with is her cackling portrait of country star Dolly Parton, which Gregory renders in enough colors to match Parton’s own “Coat of Many Colors.”
