We say “GIF of the Day,” but today it should be “GIF of a Generation,” because it is an index of everything popular in recent internet culture, while managing to maintain a pretty balanced classical composition. I stumbled across this GIF, by Isabel Laauer, on GIPHY. There, it’s tagged as #seapunk (the spinning dolphin!), #art (the ubiquitous rotating chunk of severed CGI anatomy!), and #normcore (the nondescript, GAP-esque outfit?). For good measure, the background is a gradient of the controversial “culturally sublimated” #vaporwave colors of the year and there’s a palm tree (forever vying with ficus lyrata to be the dominant CGI plant of contemporary art).
If the world is still around long enough for millennials to have grandchildren and they ask “grandperson*, what were the years 2012-2015 like?” we can pretty much just show them this GIF with an audio track of people arguing over a dubstep remix of Beyoncé farting and save on a LIFE coffee table book.
