AFC’s Fall Forecast: Goth Art Everywhere

by Michael Anthony Farley and Corinna Kirsch on August 19, 2016

Winter is coming. As the nights grow longer, shadows seem to creep into the city’s innumerable white boxes.

Our prediction for what the Fall/Winter 2016 look will be in New York: goth as fuck.

Artists, galleries, and institutions across the city seem to be embracing the macabre, gloomy, and achromatic in the months leading up to Halloween (by far, the art world’s most important holiday). We’re looking forward to aesthetic darkness, existential angst, and an embrace of the occult. Is this otherworldly tragic election season to blame for our state of mourning? We’re not sure, but let’s hope some fall weather shows up in time for us to break out our all-black wardrobes.

We’ve rated New York’s darkest upcoming art shows from “one tube of black lipstick” for “somewhat bleak” to “five tubes of black lipstick” for “this gallery is essentially a food court full of crying mall goths.” Our picks, arranged by opening date:

Thanks to Performa, we’re looking forward to a month of actual art—hopefully with less of a commercial focus than we’re used to seeing around New York. Given Performa’s ability to identify great artists, its depth of historical engagement, and the independent nature of performance art, you’re bound to find some great work this month. It’s also humongous (for better or worse). You need our guide.

July is shaping up to be an exciting month for queer art in the city, with a series of daily interventions titled “On Location” curated by Dirty Looks, the self-described “Monthly Roaming Platform for Queer Experimental Film and Video.” Dirty Looks has coordinated a screening or celebration in an art venue or a queer social site each and every day of the month, so if you have already missed out on the first few screenings (it is July 9th after all!), we are here to fill you in on some upcoming events that should not be overlooked.

Good artworks, like good bears, hibernate. For months, they can’t be found; but now, with the gradual lengthening of days, they’re poking their heads back out, and taking refuge in warming galleries.

But which?

Art Fag City is here to help. With the assistance of local guides and our own expertise, we’ve determined a few select locations where you may be fortunate enough to see good art in the wild. If you spot it, be sure to be quiet, and move slowly; good art is very easily frightened. Good luck!

A few Art Fag City friends have excitedly dropped “RUMBLE,” this week, the show of 34 year old Rashid Johnson, opening this Wednesday at Hauser & Wirth. We’re interested too, and for all the reasons you might expect. Since expanding their operations in London and Zurich to New York the gallery has have safely occupied a 69th brownstone, an area of town that seldom showcases the work of young artists. Unsurprisingly, the gallery itself bases a large portion of their business on well-established or downright famous artists at least a generation older than Johnson.

Before Irréversible, There Was Henri-Georges Clouzot

by Reid Singer on December 9, 2011

It’s good news that MoMA will be showing a series of films by Henri-Georges Clouzot between now and Christmas. Long before today’s vogue for “extremity,” Clouzot made films that fiercely challenged audiences’ moral and emotional sensibilities, creating some of the most admirable achievements in French cinema. If, like me, you wish there were more movies like “Enter the Void,” or “L’Enfant,” “Demonlover” or “Ma Mère,” then this is a retrospective for you.
