- So I’ve been going to school in Mexico City, and noticed Japanese students make up the largest percentage of my classmates. Apparently Japan and Mexico have a lot of cultural exchange programs and a fascination with each other’s subcultures (for example, there are entire shopping centers here dedicated to Otaku culture and Japanese street fashion). Several Mexican friends have told me Japanese is easier to learn than English, and vice-versa. The most idiosyncratic thing by far about this lovefest has to be the phenomenon of Japanese “Cholos” (based on Mexican-American gang culture) which is explored in the new documentary Chicano.
