This Week’s Must-See Art Events: R&B Diva to Save Distant Brown Dwarf Star

Much like Paddy’s experience of the Whitney Biennial, New York’s art scene this week is dominated by the political with a healthy smattering of painterly painting, ubiquitous identity politics, and the unapologetically weird.

Highlights include a talk about “the intersectional self” at the 8th Floor featuring Genesis P-Orridge on Thursday, followed by a solo show from Dona Nelson at Thomas Erben Gallery. We’re looking forward to Ernesto Burgos’ work at Kate Werble Gallery (think ab-ex in 3D) on Friday night and some afro-futurist cyberpunk world-building by E. Jane at American Medium on Saturday. If you need a moment of zen before the work week starts, head to E.S.P. TV’s closing reception at Pioneer Works on Sunday—you can join them on a corporate retreat, complete with a self-help guru.

This Week’s Must-See Art Events: Nightmares Before Christmas

by Michael Anthony Farley on December 12, 2016

This week there’s not a lot of art stuff happening beyond holiday parties and craft fairs. One could say NYC’s taken an unexpectedly Middle-American turn in that regard, were it not for how morbid so much of the week’s happenings are. Tuesday night, scholars Sam Tanenhaus and Richard Wolin perform a post-election autopsy on the American Republic and speculate about its afterlife (hint: It’s not looking good) at CUNY. For a slightly less depressing evening, head to Ubu Gallery where German artist Heide Hatry is opening a new series of drawings made with the ashes of human remains. If that’s not enough mortuary holiday cheer for you, Con Artist Collective is throwing a fake memorial art show for the comedian Bill Murray (one of the few national treasures that hasn’t died in 2016). Thursday night we’re looking forward to a subversive holiday group show at Kate Werble Gallery, and a six-hour night of discussions about Art After Trump at Housing Works.

Friday night, things get a little less bleak city-wide. P! and Beverly’s are hosting events for a Bard CSS project that sprawls across Chinatown and continues with satellite events all weekend. At Brooklyn’s Orgy Park, a group show invites painters to make something collaborative, and in Queens, MoMA PS1 is throwing a holiday party for artists that looks totally bonkers. Have some spiked hot chocolate. After a week of thinking about Trump and death, you’re going to need it.

Beyond Chelsea And The Lower East Side: The West Village Gallery Round-Up Part 1

Is the West Village still worth visiting for art? I asked myself this question the other day, after realizing that there’s been something of an art world exodus from the neighborhood in the past couple years. Most recently and notably, Gavin Brown’s Enterprise left their West Village space for two galleries in the Lower East Side and Harlem in the summer of 2015. But this shift out of the area began even earlier. Harris Lieberman Gallery closed in 2013, Sperone Westwater moved to the Bowery in 2010 and numerous lesser-known galleries either left or closed in between. Just trying to find a current list of West Village galleries is a study in dead link and farewell letters.

A few shuttered doors don’t tell the whole story, though, so I headed out to the West Village to find out for myself what’s out there. After an afternoon of exploring the neighborhood’s September shows, I’m happy to report that there’s plenty worth heading out to see. The results of my trip below:

It's been a rough couple weeks, with all the anticipation and all — but Art Club is finally here. Time to talk about Anna Betbeze's Moss Garden at Kate Werble. I came away from the show with a few things on my mind, and I suspect others did too.
