When it’s cold, I like to compare airline tickets on Flight Scanner — somewhere, anywhere, warm. Right now, I’m looking at the Bahamas, solely because I want to visit Pig Beach! It’s actually called Big Major Cay, and is a mysterious island where dozens of feral pigs live. Wouldn’t it be fun to swim with pigs? They’re highly social and smarter than dogs, dolphins and three year olds. They like to play and relax in the sun—I’ll take hanging with a pig over a parrothead at a surf bar any day. Here and Elsewhere: A Portrait of the Global Art Economy

It’s unfortunate, then, that the lessons I got out of Here and Elsewhere, the New Museum’s current exhibition of art from the Arab World, weren’t the least bit challenging. We’re told contemporary art should look like other contemporary art and exhibitions, and that if that art is political, it should reference past events. That’s not much of a lesson plan.

(Yay?) And then this supposedly happened: “In addition, Jarrar organized a satellite project at art space Undercurrent Projects, which consisted of informal panel discussions about the current situation in Gaza and the West Bank, as well as talks about Jarrar’s works and the state of art in Palestine.” Yes, that series was organized, but it never got off the ground. Another art project that just begging to be photographed: 888,246 red ceramic flowers will flow—like a river of blood—from the Tower of London to commemorate the British who perished during WWI. [Colossal]
It looks like all-powerful collector and MoMA’s President Emirita and Chairwoman Agnes Gund has taken up the mantle of gender inequality. (We’re just glad to hear about something other than her dogs, her wealth, and MoMA-related opinions that aren’t Glenn Lowry’s). Last month, Gund speculated that the Google Art Project, a virtualization of MoMA’s collection, will bring out more lesser-shown female artists. And now she writes in an op-ed that there’s still a long way toward gender equality in the art world. This is presumably to promote MoMA’s initiative to give the museum over entirely to women artists in 2015. That’s a good thing! [Huffington Post]
Malik Gaines, of performance troupe My Barbarian, interviews his father Charles Gaines, who’s also an artist and currently has a solo show at the Studio Museum Harlem. Gaines the elder explains what it was like to make conceptual work in the 1970s: “When I started showing in New York, my name got out there, but nobody knew I was black, and then I started going to parties or to lectures or I’d be interviewed, and I can’t tell you how many times people have come up to me and said, ‘You’re black.’ ‘I really appreciate you informing me. Three artists did a performance where they distilled liquor out of a piece of a Joseph Beuys’s sculpture, “Fettecke.” Beuys’s widow called the performance “crap and stupid.” [artnet News]
In scary, apocalypse-y news of the day, a new study says that we’re in the midst of a sixth mass extinction. [USA Today]
If you want a sense of just how hard it is to talk about the Israel/Palestine situation, last night’s “10 Days/10 Ideas” workshop was a good reminder. We hear that instead of Skyping in artist Khaled Jarrar, the event was shuffled around between venues until finally landing in a bar. Fortunately, Deborah Solomon interviewed him. [WNYC]
Given how contentious that small event seemed to be, it’s not surprising when Christian Viveros-Fauné points out that the New Museum’s Here and Elsewhere, a survey of art from the Arab world, is “New York’s first museum exhibition of art from that region.” He thinks it’s long overdue. [Artnet News]
