Before he was the star of “Latest Punch Guy in Face, Drive Fast Movie” Jason Statham was boogying down in the background of the music video for The Shamen’s “Comin On.” I was unaware of The Shamen before seeing this little masterpiece of 90’s green-screen-edalia, but I kind of like them. They have a low-rent vibe that’s like the KLF with a little C+C Music Factory thrown in. Plus this thing looks like a Jacolby Satterwhite video gone horribly wrong.
The video itself has an aesthetic that would fit nicely in today’s media landscape. I could definitely see it in MTV’s net art-inspired station identification rebranding. Sadly, the director, Nico Beyer, seems to have graduated to slick commercials for companies like BMW and Adidas. He should get weird with it again. But even if he doesn’t, he’ll always be the guy who directed the finest work that Jason Statham has ever done.
