The Allure of Magic Eye

Chicago exhibitions are generally outside the scope of the New York art news we cover here, but there isn't much going on right now, so we are recommending travel to the dedicated art connoisseur. With that said, globetrotters and Chicago readers should be warned that we have never been to the gescheidle space, but in as much as one can tell from monthly press releases, a website, and brief email correspondence, our feeling is that their programming is probably very good.

This month AFC is most specifically interested in their artists Tom Burtonwood and Holly Holmes, who will present a site specific installation titled PRODUCTplacement, at Open Studio. It's hard to imagine the installation living up to the pseudo Magic Eye sketch they created for the project, but the in-progress documentation on their site shows a promising start. Certainly, if 3-D glasses are eventually required to properly view the piece, it will top the original sketch.*

On an additional note, I think a nice companion piece to the JPEG above can be found at FunFoodsUSA.com, a site originally curated by Guthrie Lonergan for the purposes of artist Cory Arcangel and Michael Bell-Smith’s “Best of the Web” project in 2005. The website of course lacks the physicality (and admittedly simplistic social/political message) that Burtonwood and Holmes intend for their final piece, but I imagine if they were to build their work out of Internet crap this would be by far the best and most appropriate source material.

* Clearly we’re not actually asking the impossible from these people, so please don’t send me emails about this.
