SeaFair Update

Moti Hasson writes in the comments section of Tuesday’s post on Seafair, (the new art fair on a boat),

…My gallery has NO intentions showing with Seafair.
Please make sure this statement is also released on your blog.

Kind regards,

Moti Hasson

God, Seafair might be a bigger stinker than we imagined! We don’t know why Hasson was placed on the list of applicants if, as he suggests, he had no interest in the fair, but the dealer’s statement certainly seems to indicate that the fair pads their exhibitors list with galleries who have declined them. That’s not a good sign.

UPDATE: FROM MOTI HASSON via COMMENTS

Just to clear the air. We certainly have nothing against the fair. we were approached by them a year & half ago and invited to join their “ever growing list” (and they named many good names).
we did deposit $ 500, only to find out later that the “ever growing list” was not what was presented to me, and the sales rep was replaced”¦..
so we asked for our money back(and got it), a year ago.

I did e-mail the exhibitor relations people last week(they promised to pull my name off of the site).

so, Kudos and good sailing to all our caviar munching patrons”¦.

Best

“Not just anyone can come on board! For those that have the financial where-with-all, we welcome them on board.”

Thank goodness Moti is not involved–I quite like his program and gallery and was puzzled by the so-called inclusion on SeaPhair. Thank you Moti.

However, after visiting the SeaFair website–especially the Media section featuring a rather jaw-dropping and appalling animated fly-through of the megayacht–I think I am in love with the whole tacky concept. It’s like: the whole thing is rigged for tasteless rich people who haven’t quite yet gotten over the vulgar spectacle of their own wealth.

I’m smitten! Can I bum a ride in steerage?

Not that I’m against wealth per se. Lots of wealthy artists and aristocrats do good works. If a defense of SeaFair *can* be made, it’s that they know who their audience is, what kind of stuff they buy, and it’s really not pretending to be anything else or for anyone else (and they enforce it, apparently..!).
It’s a social event for a specific elite crowd, like many gallery openings, really…
