Washington City Paper: The Sincerest Form of Flattery

Inane behavior abounds. Washington Post head art critic Blake Gopnik writes positively about an exhibition of paintings by Christine Bailey, an artist his wife just happens to be friends with, in an office space (not a gallery) in Baltimore. He also dismisses Cara Ober’s complaint that work looks just like Christine Bailey’s because it is appropriation art.  And yet, no mention of Ober’s work appears on the wall labels or in the original press release.

What really struck me about Gopnik’s analysis of the controversy is how dismissive he is of Ober’s work… whether her paintings are interesting or not is really parenthetical to the appropriation issue and in the context taking cheap shots at her art seems a bit mean-spirited. I blogged about this the other day.
