VBS has a great four part feature on Gary Panter an artist known for his comics and album covers, paintings, and the sets of Pee Wee’s playhouse. Only two of the videos have been completed, both of which are embedded above, the second a must see. Here Panter discusses the style of Pee Wee’s playhouse explaining, “This is a show made by artists cause it was like Rick Heitzman, Wayne White, my co-designers and all the fantastic people at Broadcast Arts and the other companies, they were all artists, and we put art history all over the show.” Panter doesn’t name all these references, but goes on to describe the sets as bad acid trips. The video finishes up with a clip of the artist talking about his parents. He tells the VBS they are afraid of his work and though his manner is casual, he’s clearly hurt by this.

This reminds me… did Rob Zombie work on sets for Pee Wee’s playhouse before getting into music? I remember reading something about that years ago. Not that it matters, but it is interesting.
