Speaking in front of the wooden cage in which he spent an entire year between 1978 and 1979, Teching, or ‘Sam’ as he is also known, talks about the experiences he endured creating this particular piece of performance art.

Not sure why, but for all the years I’ve loved and thought about this work, this is the first time it struck me that Tehching must have been reasonably financially secure to have done it. A year at a time without earning money. . . and the photographer more than likely did not work gratis.
