Jeff Koons, Puppy Vase, 1998, White glazed porcelain vase, 17-1/2 x 17-1/2 x 10-1/2 inches (44.5 x 44.5 x 26.7 cm), Edition of 3000. Image via: Gagosian.

Here’s an email not likely to boost company moral: “The luxury of carrying under-performing employees is now a thing of the past.”  Those heartwarming sentiments come straight from a Larry Gagosian email sent out this past March and were mentioned in a short news item run over at ArtInfo yesterday about the gallery’s new bookstore. Not that it has too much to do with their venture past speculation about how they will afford the new shop. No details were offered about the size and possible cost of the store, but according to ArtInfo, come September 14th, we’ll able to check out the Madison Avenue location ourselves. Just as the online store sells their catalogues, books, and magazines so too will this store. Coincidentally, according to the Gagosian website, a Jeff Koons puppy vase, made in an edition of 3000, now sells for $7,500.00. I’m not particularly well versed in the Koons market, but this seems like a hefty price for such a large edition size.

Gagosian’s building is owned by Aby Rosen, who would very likely be glad to have any kind of commercial presence to break up the vast stretches of empty storefronts on Madison Avenue.

In other words, the rent could easily be one Koons puppy vase/month.

If that’s the case it would match at least one other recent gallery expansion — Horton & Lui — which due to a rent negotiation was able to keep their LES space and take over the old Taxter and Spengemann space in Chelsea.

To satisfy the rent, there probably ARE 12 people who would step in and buy a Koon’s puppy during the course of a year. But what a beating for his rep.
