The artist Jeanne-Claude has died. She was 74. The Associated Press is reporting that the artist, who, with her husband, Christo, created “The Gates,” the 2005 art installation in Central Park, among many other works, died Wednesday night at a New York hospital from complications of a brain aneurysm.

I had the good fortune to meet her and Christo with the students of the New York Studio Program on two occasions. Jeanne-Claude had such a dignified presence, perhaps learned as the daughter of a French general, but carried into the art world and used with notable effect when negotiating with heads of state, mayors and other officials to propose and realize their projects. She also had a high sense of honor and integrity in working with hundreds of assistants – and always paid them!
