The Man Who Made Curating an Art | The New York Observer

Great profile on Hans Ulrich Obrist explaining his contributions as a curator. Gallerist Barbara Gladstone says he used to wake up in the middle of the night to read books, and that he had a huge library in Switzerland where he stored his books. Also, Tom Eccles, the executive director of the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, says about the job itself: “In many ways, curators took on the role of what we might have once thought of as a role of the critic. Someone like Clement Greenberg was able to codify moments in art and promote individual artists into groups, and say, ‘This is what is significant in our time.’ I think there’s a moment in the ’80s when that transfers over to curators.”

still trying to wrap head around idea of using “A Brief History of Curating” as a hook for an article. wow.

And I even built a NYT piece around HUO’s “Unrealized Projects” series…
