Nao Bustamante, t-shirt
Bravo’s Work of Art contestant and performance artist Nao Bustamante is already selling t-shirts of her sort-of famous line, “I’m not responsible for your experience of my work.” Even though we described the claim as absurd Thursday — this was a reality show portrait competition not a revisitation of Allen Kaprow’s writings — we’re contemplating purchasing a few for the office. It’s a great line. (Hat tip: David Harper)
Not to beat the Work of Art Horse to death, but Brian Moylan’s comments last week on Gawker about why Jackson Pollock and all other contemporary art sucks made at least one reader ask if there were any other field in which ignorance from the mainstream press is so acceptable. “If you said, I really hate all that honking in Jazz, you’d never get a job writing again,” he observed.
The hope is that Bravo’s Work of Art will tone down the general level of anger and ignorance the public directs towards art. It’s a long shot, but I think these T-shirts help.
