Koons for Kids: Artrageous 2010

POST BY ANNE JOHNSON

Jeff Koons, “Hulk Elvis”. 2009 Artrageous collaboration with kids.

As Young and The Restless soap star Victor Newman noted last year, there is a certain child-like whimsy to Jeff Koons' work. We assume this will be no more evident than in the art he will create tomorrow during his collaboration with children to create a work for the Artrageous** charity auction. Participating in his ninth year at the event (the Koons and kids piece above brought $500,000 at the auction last year benefiting foster kids) the artist and his wife Justine are not only contributing works, but are also honorary chairs. Other collaborators include Ross Bleckner, Donald Baechler, April Gornik, Roberto Dutesco, and many more.

This year, the auction will take place at New York's Cipriani on May 24. Itching to go? A single seat at the dinner and a chance to bid on the Koons pieces will run you at least $500 at the “creative black tie” event, whatever that means. Too rich for this poor college student. I guess I'll just have to flip through the Jeff Koons: Versailles coffee-table book and reminisce.

**This Artrageous is not to be confused with the Jersey City Museum gala, ArtRageous, or that of the American Art Museum, ARTrageous, or the trademarked Artrageous, a benefit for Nashville CARES. The proceeds from this Artrageous event go to the Edwin Gould Services for Children and Family, a foster care agency in New York City.
