Word is Ryan McGinness’ event “Women, The Blacklight Paintings”, at Club Madonna last night was a total shit show. I’m not sure what McGinness promised past dancing painted strippers, but whatever the case, I don’t think the event went well for anyone. VIP cards were not honored by bouncers, and according to AFC roomies, strippers were screaming at awkward bearded hipsters for money. Apparently the fine art crowd is not particularly receptive to grinding.

Umm. Looks like pornography to me. Sex still sell?
Matthew, this is a picture of porno from Club Madonna’s website. It has nothing to do with Ryan’s project, which was to draw nudes at the club and turn the abstracted figures into a series of universal symbols. The event was just an opportunity to bring attention to the project and throw a party, which relates to his series of 50 Parties. There are more layers to it all than can be quickly read on the surface.
strippers and awkward bearded hipsters…priceless.
sounds like sour grapes. i had a GREAT time. i love ryan’s work, but enjoyed his mural at wynwood walls more than the canvases in the club. as for the party, i got there on time, sailed right in and had a fantastic time. i never saw any yelling and there wasn’t the usual preponderance of bearded pirate hipsters i was seeing at other parties, so i must have missed that yelling bearded guy action. the only thing that seemed out of place was the lack of tipping from the people sitting around the stage, but i assumed they just hadn’t been to enough strip clubs to know the etiquette. maybe if you had made it inside the party you might have formed a different opinion. from the looks of happy smirks on their faces, my section of the fine art world seemed to be enjoying the grinding. : )
