The art coffee table world got a little more current. Josh Baer tells us Taschen’s Art Now! Vol: 4 will be on shelves this September, and for those of us who need an easy overview of the contemporary art world this is a great place to start.

The directory lists over 100 artists and dedicates four pages to each artist. Three of these pages are simply reproductions of the artist’s work. The remaining space is filled with description about the artist’s work—a single paragraph translated into English, German, and French.

As for why some artists make the list some years and not others: it’s not exactly a mystery. John Baldessari, for example, is a very important artist, but wasn’t listed in the directory in their 2008 edition, Art Now, Volume 3. That changed this year, after the artist’s enormously successful traveling retrospective.

Ai Weiwei is featured in both 2008 and 2013 because he’s been in the news basically non-stop. Walton Ford—well, he’s a bit of a mystery—but we did name his show of Gorilla heads and masturbating monkeys at Paul Kasmin two years ago “The Best Show in Chelsea”. Perhaps that explains the inclusion.
