Color Wheel is a series in which we identify a trending color in art for the week and post a daily image that illustrates its popularity. In honor of PandaCam, we’re continuing our black and white series.
With all its parts moving in different directions, this circular animated GIF is about as good as they get. As it happens, this animation isn’t just a bit of eye candy; it’s derived from the
phenakistoscope, a device invented 155 years ago that used a spinning disc attached vertically to a handle. Around the disk were a series of sequential drawings that when shown in rapid succession would appear to be a single moving image.
While this particular image meets Color Wheel’s criteria for Black and White, there are a number of more colorful images made by this device, floating around the web. For a more comprehensive look, check out Colossal.
