Art coverage just took a turn for the better at VICE. The magazine has appointed AFC contributor Matthew Leifheit as its new photo editor, which means a whole new world of ham butts, gay models, and poeticism for the publication.

This new role comes as no surprise. In addition to curating shows and publishing his own photo magazine MATTE, his latest interview series has been a huge success at AFC. He discusses photography with people who’ve shaped all facets of the contemporary photo world– from the self-published Mossless Magazine, to artist of community Jaimie Warren, to renowned critic Vince Aletti. They are also, interesting. His discussion with Stephen Koch on Peter Hujar particularly tops the books in gripping artist narratives, and we think everyone should read it.

Above all, his new appointment fills some of our deep editorial hopes for art. Matthew will introduce dozens of under-known and deserving artists to a much larger audience, and with a level of diligence that’s pretty rare in the blogosphere. We need more of that, so this is a bigger deal than a simple promotion notice.
