Hypersalon in Miami
One of the great joys of the Miami fairs are the hidden gems within them. There’s nothing better than finding these gifts and being able to share them with your friends. Count Hypersalon amongst those tidings for us this year. On view through appointment only, this exhibition is a joint effort by Transfer and XPO gallery and includes two show rooms, a lecture room and a yard full of public art. I wasn’t able to attend any of the lectures, but I did get a full tour of the exhibitions. I’m biased—Kelani Nichole, the owner of Transfer, shares a space with Art F City—but I thought the production was wholly impressive. I recommend seeing it. Today, the exhibition is open to the public: 645 Michigan Ave. A few highlights.
TRANSFER
Transfer, Installation view
One of my favorite works at Basel. It’s Rollin Leonard, splattered on the wall into a million pieces. Apparently it’s being sold in individual bits—if I were a millionaire collector I think I’d want the whole thing on my wall. It’s just so weird and funny.
Rollin Leonard. A detail!
I’ll admit I was skeptical about the idea of recreating Hieronymus Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights with emoji. How effectively can a bunch of happy emoji tell us a morality story? That’s probably the update, but also, there’s so many creative back flips achieved in this rendering it’s hard not to be impressed. From the crew of emoji transporting a wiener to the three pane sunset in the Garden of Eden, this piece will keep you looking for hours.
Daniel Temkin made these pixel flip flops for the fair. These look like computer pixel sunsets to me, which makes them perfect for Miami. Photo: AFC
XPO GALLERY
Xpo Gallery
Xpo Gallery, Installation view. The highpoint in this group exhibition is this draped jug by Clement Valla. The new replicating the old. Along side is a projected website by Vincent Broquaire called loading-error.com that contains only a loading bar and a picture of man constantly running in front of it.
HYPERSUITE
On the first floor, a series of 8 shows projected on the walls and various devices can viewed with the click of mouse. Very cool. This is an installation view of Postmaster co-owner Magda Sawon’s curated show “Serious Whimsy” which includes Rafael RozenDaal, Olia Lialina, Eva and Franco Mattes, Serkan Ozkaya, Jodi, Ryder Ripps, Tabor Robak, Petra Cortright, and a mystery utube non-art viral video.
