An Evening with Shana Moulton: Monday, March 16, 7:00 PM
Hurry up, get off your bum, and make your way to MoMA for some art we like. You might like it, too.
Shana Moulton’s “Cynthia,” the hapless, and hopeless, protagonist from her “Whispering Pines” video series, embodies the 21st century’s odd reliance on spiritual consumerism. She’s always trying to better herself, whether through new-age crystals or facial goop. The sets are pure Cheez Whiz, that is to say, artificial. And overly pastel, and like some version of Pee-Wee’s Playhouse. All this makes sense to offset the truly depressing quests Cynthia sets herself upon.
We don’t know for sure which videos will be shown in MoMA’s big-screen theater—the museum’s press release just says “recent works,” but if they’re anything like “Whispering Pines,” expect some absurdity, and maybe an Enya dance party. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the artist, with a special appearance by her collaborator Nick Hallett.
