Earlier today we lamented that the MoMA/PS1 Greater New York artist list was still under embargo. Two minutes later the list was released. So much for that.

Since 2000, Greater New York has run every 5 years, making this quinquennial the fourth edition. Typically the shows are organized by in-house curators—in contrast to the Whitney Biennial which brings in outside curators—though this year, MoMA also enlisted University of Rochester art historian Douglas Crimp. Amongst other accolades Crimp curated the acclaimed “Pictures” exhibition at Artists Space in 1977. In addition to Crimp, three other curators make up the team: Peter Eleey, MoMA PS1’s curator and associate director of exhibitions and programs; Thomas J. Lax, associate curator of media and performance art at MoMA; and Mia Locks, MoMA PS1 assistant curator.

But let’s cut to the chase. Who’s on the list and what do we make of it? Not too much—the show hasn’t opened. There’s a limit to a blogger’s crystal ball. Basically, all we can tell you is that the show will offer wider look at the New York Contemporary scene than in years past where the focus has been on emerging artists. We’ve got dead male New York artists (Richard Artschwager, William Greaves, Lebbeus Woods, Gordon Matta Clarke). We’ve got establishment artists (Dara Birnbaum, Red Grooms, David Hamons, Charles Atlas). We’ve got mid-career artists (Michael Bell-Smith, Fia Backstrom, Seth Price). And we’ve got emerging artists. (Sondra Perry, Rebecca Patek, Bunny Rogers – all of whom we’ve lauded here.)

What all this will amount to is anyone’s guess but as soon as this show opens, we’ll let you know.
