This has to be the nerdiest GIF we’ve posted in a good while. The above animation illustrates how a timber joint fits together. These Tetris-like forms lend themselves to GIF making—so much so that a Japanese artist so obsessed with the technique set up a Twitter account called The Joinery dedicated to the like. (hat tip: Dezeen)
You can visit the Twitter account to see all the animations, but to geek out for a moment myself—Twitter is not the ideal medium for this file format. The platform requires a user to press “play” on the GIFs, which is antithetical to its original purpose. What’s more, because Twitter has figured out that GIFs are popular, it’s nearly impossible to remove the files to share them elsewhere. I hate to keep beating the democracy drum, but the whole reason GIFs became popular in the first place was their quick loading times, and ease of sharability. Twitter removes both these qualities.
