I’ll try to write this up with the least amount of spoilers possible.
The internet is abuzz with speculation that a detail caught by some eagle-eyed Game of Thrones viewers might allude to a dark plot twist in the future. Of course, fans backed up their theories in GIF form [h/t Buzzfeed]. And knowing GOT‘s obsessive production values and attention to detail, it’s hard to not think of something as simple as a hairstyle holding some kind of significant meaning.
Basically, Sansa Stark (whose trajectory from ingenue victim to vengeful anti-hero is like a plot line from Greek tragedy) has a disagreement about (what else?) vengeance with her maybe-half-brother (?) Jon Snow. After the confrontation, the topic of conversation turns to arch-villainess Cersei Lannister, who basically ruined Sansa’s life. While Sansa pleads with Jon to perceive her as a viable threat, he remarks “You almost sound as if you admire her.”
To which Sansa replies, “I learned a great deal from her.”
What gets everyone nerding out about this scene is the fact that Sansa is wearing her hair just like Cersei used to before her whole head-shearing walk-of-shame episode:
Foreshadowing? This is likely more than an instance of a wig stylist being lazy and recycling looks. Part of what makes GOT so fun to watch as an art critic is seeing the joy with which fans pour over every frame as an art historian might an Hieronymus Bosch composition. It looks like Sansa might just follow in her mother-in-law’s footsteps and try her hand at being a ruthless, revenge-obsessed queen?
